“I go to the theatre to be entertained… I don’t want to see plays about rape, sodomy and drug addiction… I can get all that at home.” Peter Cook
Dozens of my plays have been performed across the country, from New York City to upstate New York, from Ashland, Oregon to Orange County, California, as well as in Mexico. I won a Walden Fellowship, an award given to three Oregon writers or artists each year.
If you have questions about my plays or would like more information about them, please email me at msaunderswriter@yahoo.com.
A long time ago, I wrote a short play set on New Year’s Eve. It was my second play and it was performed in NYC, as well as in Portland. A screenplay adaptation of the play was made into a movie (don’t ask) and an excerpt from the play was published in one of those actor anthologies. If you have a few minutes, please click on the play's title and read it: Am I Right?
Please click on the play's title to read O. Henry's Shoe, a timely play for the holiday season about the concept of generosity.
Ho, Ho, Ho... Please click on the play's title to read Dec. 26," my very brief Christmas play, which takes about as much time to read as it does to reach the first commercial break in "It's a Wonderful Life."
My ten-minute play "Some People Say" was recently produced as part of the popular cultural event in Washington, D.C. known as The Source Festival. It was one of only six short plays selected out of more than 450 entries. Thank you, Source Festival!
What happens when an aging Sherlock Holmes, now with a family of his own, is forced into retirement and becomes a pain in the butt to his family? My play "The Case of the Missing Know-It-All" explores this what-if topic about the perils of retirement. The play had its premiere in the San Diego area with the ShowOff! Festival, one of the best 10-minute play festivals in the country. The play will also be performed by the Minnesota Short Plays Festival in September of 2017, another much-anticipated annual theatre event.
My short play GUBMINT was selected to be part of the sUBVERsIVE sHORTs 2011 festival in Buffalo, NY. The festival runs from June 16 through July 17. If you're in, around, or about Buffalo, please stop in and see the show.
My play "The Running Mate," which was initially given a fantastic staged reading during the Willamette Writers 2010 annual conference, was accepted by Actors Theatre of Santa Cruz, Ca. for their Best of the Rest annual festival of 10-minute plays.

PLAY IN FERTILE GROUND 2011 FESTIVAL
My play SPOUSED will be performed as part of the Fertile Ground Festival, a 10-day festival of world premieres by Portland area artists. SPOUSED is a short comedy (although tall people would enjoy it as well). It’s part of an evening of six comedies by Nameless Playwrights Group; tickets are $8 in advance or $10 at the door.
For tickets, please go to www.boxofficetickets.com and search for “Fertile Ground.” Then, scroll down until you reach “New Plays by Nameless Playwrights.” My play will be on Monday, January 24, at the Someday Lounge in downtown Portland.
I was interviewed by the Fertile Ground folks. My brief interview is posted on the Fertile Ground blog (you’ll need to scroll down to find my interview; I opted not to have a photo but I think enough of you know what I look like):

I’m pleased to announce that I am a founding member of Nameless Playwrights Group, a new playwrights group dedicated to creating original plays for all ages. I’m one of eight founding members and we’re all over 60. You could say we’re Portland’s “newest-oldest” playwrights group. Shortly after its formation, Nameless Playwrights(NP) joined in a fiscal partnership with Bump in the Road Theatre, sharing many of the same goals (www.bumpintheroad.org)
Collectively our lives span more than half a millennium. All have been produced across the country and the world; all have been honored with prizes and awards. Whether our plays are controversial or cantankerous, charming or just plain silly, our mission remains the same: To create lively and timely stories for the stage. We’ll be showcasing new work during the Fertile Ground 2011 Festival, so stay tuned for details.
